  Atelopus rescue project

This new international project and strategy was necessary after our detection of the Chytrid fungus in populations of Atelopus pulcher and the vast range extinctions of A. peruensis and A. “pachydermus” witnessed by us in 2000 at Cajamarca. But despite of the declines and extinctions in other countries, Peru still holds a big amount of new species to be discovered. Read more......

 About INIBICO

INIBICO is a Non Government Organization, dedicated exclusively to basic biological research and its applications in Northeastern and East Central Peru. INIBICO includes: Fishery Biologists, Herpetologists, Botanists (Orchids), Civil Engineers and Ecologists, Agro-industrial Engineers and other interested persons.

INIBICO is a direct cooperating institution with the international Declining Amphibian Population Task Force (DAPTF) and Kansas University (KU). We can provide infrastructure, logistics, training and guidance for biological field investigation projects in Northeastern Peru. Read more......

 New species names and field station names for financial sponsors

Coralluscajuv.jpgINIBICO field teams discover constantly new species of frogs, orchids, lizards and snakes. At the moment we have a list of about 10 new species of frogs to be described and as we constantly need to improve our scientific equipment, camera gear and install new permanent field stations for research and ecotourism, we need SPONSORS which might finance some of these projects. This practice is widespread among insect and bird research and we want to apply this system now to frogs, other herps and orchids and name species after good sponsors which help us to finance different urgent projects.  Dendrobates mysteriosus
Mystijuv.jpgSince the rediscovery of Dendrobates mysteriosus by Rainer Schulte in 1989 (see Schulte 1990) there was the urgent need to do something to preserve the last habitats of this totally outstanding frog species, that according to newest molecular genetic research (Becky Symula and Kyle Summers, East Carolina University, in prep.) has a lineage that goes independently parallel to all Dendrobates and connects at the root of their tree, a situation similar to Minyobates steyermarki (Vences et al. 2003). This status is enough reason to put this species immediately on PRIORITY 1 listing for conservation efforts- but with the result that nobody cares for a small CITES 2 frog when elephants, dolphins and other mammal protection projects can create more publicity highlights in the media. In the past we got Emails from national and international students and scientists who want to do investigations in our rainforests of the Cordillera Oriental or other sites. As Tarapoto is the only city with good infrastructure which has a maximum of ecosystems close like Lowland Forest, Premontane and Montane rainforests, cloud forests, Paramo, and the severely endangered Amazonian Dry Forest, the opportunities for researchers of all branches are nearly unlimited.
